At last! BMW has just unveiled more details about its super SUV, the 2024 BMW XM Label Red. The new model, sportier than the already very fast XM launched earlier this year, takes performance to another level, the XM Label Red becoming the most powerful production vehicle in the brand’s history. It’s also worth remembering that the XM – Label Red or not – is the first vehicle designed solely by the wizards of the M division since the very first car to wear the famous badge, the legendary BMW M1.
Mechanically, the 2024 BMW XM Label Red retains its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, but the block now makes 577 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, which is already a 94-horsepower gain over the V8 bolted into the “regular” XM. Torque, on the other hand, gains 74 ft-lb, for a total of 553 ft-lb, available between 1,800 and 5,400 rpm.
But, since we live in an era of electrification, the XM Label Red is also aided by an electric motor installed inside the eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine delivering an additional 194 horsepower and 207 ft-lb of torque. The automaker also patented a pre-gearing stage used to increase the torque produced by the motor to a maximum of 332 ft-lb at the transmission’s input for the motor.
BMW also showed a quick video on Youtube showing a new entry in the XM lineup, simply called XM 50e, a version that could benefit from a straight-six engine and a more powerful PHEV system.
The extra torque is, according to the brand, felt during start-up acceleration or acceleration on the highway. Despite its extensive curb weight, the BMW XM Label Red is capable of 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.8 seconds, the same time needed by a BMW X6 M Competition by the way. Oh, and the top speed is limited at 282 km/h (or 175 mph).
Since the XM Label Red is a plug-in hybrid SUV, it’s only natural that it offers a range in electric mode, which BMW estimates at about 50 km (or 31 miles), thanks to a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 19.2 kWh. In electric mode, the vehicle can run at a speed of up to 140 km/h (or 87 mph).
The vehicle’s built-in charger allows AC charging of 7.4 kW, which means that the battery can be recharged from 0 to 100 percent of its capacity in just over three hours (3.25 hours according to BMW).
The flagship status for the M division gives the XM Label Red a very long list of equipment developed to enhance the vehicle’s performance, such as an M xDrive all-wheel drive system that prioritizes the rear axle for a sportier ride, an electronic limited-slip differential, adaptive suspension, four-wheel steering, an M Sport braking system with six-piston front and single-piston calipers at the rear.
The XM Label Red comes standard with 23-inch diameter wheels, but this can be downsized to 22-inch wheels at no extra-cost. As with the less powerful XM, the sporty crossover is distinguished by these colorful accents, including around the grille, side windows, wheels and even behind. BMW badges are housed in the top two corners of the rear window. BMW also unveiled this limited edition of 500 units called the BMW XM Label Red First Edition, which retains the Toronto Red accents and this satin black body color. Even the interior gets this black and red finish. As for this cabin, it is heavily equipped with a very long list of technologies and noble materials like leather, carbon fiber and brushed aluminum. The manufacturer has not yet disclosed the price of this even more explosive XM, but if you need to ask, maybe this one is not meant for you.
