There have been all sorts of reports about the future of the Volkswagen Golf in recent weeks, most of them far from bullish. Many rumors point to some versions of the Golf including the Sportwagen and Alltrack not returning after next year.
The future of the all-electric Volkswagen e-golf was also uncertain. According to VW Public Relations Manager Thomas Tetzlaff, however, a 2020 e-golf will be available next year. That being said, it will be interesting to see if VW can fix the electric Golf’s supply problem. There is currently a reported 8-month waiting period for an e-golf according to a few Volkswagen dealerships we and others have spoken to. In other words, the Volkswagen e-golf is a unicorn right now.
Offering roughly 200 kilometers of range, it can’t travel as far on a single charge as many of its competitors including the Nissan LEAF and Chevrolet Bolt. On the flip side, it’s the most “normal” electric vehicle of the lot and feels just as sporty and fun to drive as a regular Golf. It’s also more affordable than the Nissan and Chevrolet, especially now that the iZEV program is in effect.
The 2020 Volkswagen e-golf will happen and that’s good news. The only thing we can hope for now is that Volkswagen builds enough of them to meet demand.
