The Volvo recall affects 2018 and 2019 Volvo XC60 models. Roughly 167,000 XC60 units were recalled around the world with just under 4,000 units located in Canada.
The problem is located in the rear tailgate lift mechanism. According to Transport Canada, a loosening of the automatic tailgate motor can cause the rear hatch to not open in cold temperatures or seperate the tailgate arms.
“If the tailgate arms separate, a spring may be projected rearward and create a risk of injury”, Transport Canada said.
Volvo said the recall is a “preventative safety measure” and no reports of serious injuries had been received. Volvo dealers will simply replace the system at no cost to the owner, obviously.
The Swedish automaker has been on a roll recently, introducing new models or redesigning current models at an unprecedented pace. The redesigned Volvo S60 and all-new Volvo XC40 and Volvo V60 Cross Country are just a few examples.
