Highlights for the next generation G80 M3 will be numerous. The first is that the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-6-cylinder engine will be tuned to produce up to 510-horsepower. The other is that it will be lighter and finally, like the F90 BMW M5, it will feature AWD.
On the latter point, upset fans are inevitable however the wisdom states that the car’s AWD system will feature a similar setup to the M5. Here, the system can fully deactivate the front-axle enabling all the desired hooning at the touch of a button.
The interwebs say that there might be two states of tune offered with the M3. The “lower” version would be delivered with only 480-horsepower while the top-line Competition version will get the full 510. As far as transmissions are concerned, no word yet on a manual option unless the most stripped out “Pure” iteration is selected, should it be offered at all.
The extra power will go hand-in-hand with BMW’s latest and lighter CLAR modular platform for what promises to be the fastest BMW M3 ever produced.
Odds are we will the new F80 M# for the first time at this fall’s upcoming Frankfurt auto show. Failing that, next year’s Geneva Motor Show.
