2025 Volkswagen Golf Overview

2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Volkswagen Golf has long been the German brand’s best-selling vehicle worldwide, but consumer needs and wants changed over time, with crossovers obviously being the more popular choice these past few years. Nevertheless, the 2025 Volkswagen Golf is available in Canada in GTI and R variants.

While the Golf was once offered in a multitude of body styles and variants on our market, including three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, station wagon and even the higher-riding Golf Alltrack wagon, the Golf GTI and Golf R are the remaining configurations left in Canada. And unsurprisingly, they’re the most enjoyable ones from a performance standpoint.

2025 Volkswagen Golf Changes and Updates

The Golf GTI and R get a product refresh for the 2025 model year. That includes revised exterior styling with illuminated upper grille and VW logo, front-door GTI badging, new paint colors and new alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the Golf benefits from new seat upholstery along with a redesigned center stack housing a 12.9-inch infotainment system touchscreen, Carbon Gray accenting, illuminated climate control and audio control sliders, new pushbutton steering wheel controls and a new ventilated wireless charging pad. The Golf R also obtains an output boost from 315 to 328 horsepower.

The Golf GTI Performance is gone for 2025, while the Golf R Black Edition, sporting black exterior accents and badging along with real carbon fibre interior trim, is new.

What the 2025 Volkswagen Golf Does Well

  • Obviously, driving pleasure is the main GTI and R strong point. Their engines are both torque-rich, and performance is brilliant. The Golf R goes a step further not only in straight-line acceleration, but also in handling to due to its standard 4MOTION all-wheel drivetrain.
  • It’s a hatchback, which enhances the compact car’s everyday practicality. The cargo area volume with the seatbacks down may seem low, compared to other compact five-doors such as the Honda Civic, but it’s not the case. The Golf is spacious and versatile.
  • Interior fit and finish may be not class-leading, but it’s good. There are several details here and there that help, such as the meaty steering wheel, the very supportive seats and their upscale appearance, as well as the quality of most materials that make up the dashboard and door panels.
  • We’ve praised the car’s driving dynamics above, but there’s actually more to the story. It accelerates fiercely, it handles, it stops on a dime, yet it remains a comfortable daily driver. Overall, it’s a better daily driver than its competitors who are all great, but the GTI and R are just a step above for the ownership experience.

What the 2025 Volkswagen Golf Doesn’t Do Well

  • The Golf’s dashboard isn’t quite an ergonomic benchmark. Almost all the climate controls have been relegated to the touchscreen, while the centre console slider controls for temperature and volume adjustments are difficult to use while driving. We also still can’t figure out why the defrost buttons were placed to the left of the steering wheel. At least the steering wheel touch-sensitive button pads have been replaced by separate, hard buttons.
  • Fuel economy is good, but not great. The Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N Line, Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo and MINI Cooper S all consume less fuel than the GTI. The Golf R fares a little better compared to the Honda Civic Type R and the Hyundai Elantra N, while consuming slightly more than the Mazda3 with its turbo engine and AWD.
  • The Golf GTI and R equipped with the 19-inch wheels offer a rather stiff ride. The thin-sidewall 235/35R19 tires are actually to blame here. The base GTI moved up from 17- to 18-inch wheels, which are slightly better than the 19s for ride comfort.
  • The automated transmission bangs off quick upshifts under hard acceleration, although under normal driving, it can produce the occasional jerkiness as well.

2025 Volkswagen Golf Competition

The Volkswagen Golf competes with the Fiat 500e, the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4, the Mazda3, the MINI Cooper, the Nissan LEAF, the Nissan Sentra, the Nissan Versa, the Subaru Impreza, the Toyota Corolla, the Toyota Prius and the Volkswagen Jetta.
