Cadillac Super Cruise Update Adds Auto Lane Changes

  • New Cadillac Super Cruise system will now be able to automatically change lanes
  • Upgrade confirmed for 2021 Cadillac CT4, CT5, and Escalade
  • Previous Super Cruise system cannot be upgraded

Cadillac’s Super Cruise system is one of the most advanced driver assistance technologies there is and can rival anything Tesla or German automakers offer.

Now, Cadillac is adding one more feature one 2021 Cadillac CT4, CT5, and upcoming Escalade models. Automated lane changes will indeed now be included with Super Cruise.

The technology works like its name implies. The car will switch lanes for you when you activate your turn signal after checking for obstacles and other vehicles. Various signals on the instrument cluster such as “looking for an opening” and “changing lanes” will be displayed so the driver knows what’s going on.

The automated lane change feature is made possible thanks to rear-facing sensors and updated map software that allows Super Cruise to change lanes on highway interchanges and in turns as well.

Unfortunately, current Super Cruise systems can’t be upgraded to offer it. According to Motor1.com who spoke with Cadillac, the new features require GM’s new digital vehicle platform and its upgraded data processing power to function. In other words, current Super Cruise-equipped cars aren’t smart enough to lane change themselves.

Still, Super Cruise is one of the great underrated technologies of the automotive industry and we are happy to see it’s getting even better.
