A 2008 Hyundai Elantra that reached a historic milestone of one million kilometres has been fully restored, thanks to a collaboration between Hyundai Canada and the popular Quebec TV show *Roulez au Suivant*. The restored Elantra, now sporting a design inspired by Hyundai’s N performance division, was gifted to a young Quebec resident, marking the next chapter in the vehicle’s remarkable journey.
This 2008 Hyundai Elantra, purchased used from Hyundai Granby in 2011, achieved the highest recorded mileage of any Hyundai vehicle in Canada. Starting with just 30,000 kilometres on the odometer, Roy covered an average of 107,000 kilometres annually as part of his work, pushing the vehicle to the one-million-kilometre mark by 2020. After reaching this milestone, Roy traded the Elantra for a Hyundai Kona, and the dealership bought back the high-mileage vehicle, setting the stage for its transformation.
The comprehensive restoration of the Elantra was featured on Roulez au Suivant, a Quebec TV show hosted by automotive journalist Antoine Joubert. Hyundai Canada donated the car to the show, and the team restored it for a deserving recipient. Lachance, a teenager from Rougemont, Quebec, was selected from hundreds of applications he and his family submitted.
The restoration process involved extensive work on the vehicle’s mechanics, bodywork, and interior. Although the original engine remained in excellent condition, Hyundai Canada replaced it with a new engine short block to provide Lachance with a fresh start. Over 100 parts were supplied by Hyundai Canada to ensure the vehicle’s longevity, and the odometer, which had stopped at 999,999 km, was reset with an added “1” to signify its incredible journey.
In a nod to Hyundai’s N performance brand, the Elantra was painted in the distinctive “Performance Blue” colour, with additional red-lined skirts reminiscent of the current Elantra N model. The N logo and the word “INSPIRED” were added to the vehicle to complete its transformation.
Most of the Elantra’s extensive mileage is attributed to Jocelyn Roy, who meticulously maintained the vehicle throughout its years of service. After purchasing the Elantra’s replacement, Roy was invited to be part of the vehicle’s handover to Lachance, offering a heartfelt moment as the car began its new life.
