Mitsubishi Triton Absolute Concept Eyes Jeep Gladiator Rubicon And Ranger Raptor

We don’t really know the Mitsubishi Triton here in North America, but elsewhere it’s a fairly popular pickup with some off-road chops.

If it were offered in North America, it would rival models like the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado and recent Ford Ranger. The Mitsubishi Triton Absolute concept on the other hand aims at the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and the Ford Ranger Raptor.

The Ranger Raptor was unveiled last year in Europe with a more rugged setup and more aggressive exterior design while the Gladiator Rubicon will be the most off-road worthy Gladiator trim when it debuts later this year. The Mitsubishi Triton Absolute concept was unveiled at the Bangkok International Auto show yesterday as a more muscular version of Mitsu’s Triton pickup.

The Triton has been around in its current generation since 2015 and received a slight refresh last year. It’s also known as the LM200 in some markets and will be part of Mitsubishi’s global vehicle strategy moving forward. When we sat down with Mitsubishi head of global products Vincent Cobee earlier this year, he basically told us not to hold our breaths on the Triton coming to North America citing regulations and heavy competition.

In other words, there’s almost no chance the Triton Absolute ever makes it to our shores. That’s unfortunate because we could certainly get behind its looks. There’s 50 millimeters more of ground clearance thanks to a new suspension setup, carbon fiber inserts, 18-inch tires, and Falken Wildpeak off-road tires.

A turbocharged diesel engine with 180 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque is used to power the Triton Absolute concept. Mitsubishi hopes to gather feedback from the market before deciding to produce the new Triton or not.
