Porsche 911 Hybrid Confirmed By CEO, EV Strategy Detailed

  • Long-awaited Porsche 911 Hybrid may happen sooner rather than later
  • CEO says it will be “highest-performance 911 of all”
  • Won’t be a plug-in

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has reaffirmed the brand’s intention to build the Porsche 911 Hybrid. Although it has be talked about for a long time and Porsche had already say they were working on one, this is the most potent confirmation to date of an electrified 911.

Speaking with Top Gear, Blume said “We have said the next 911 will add a hybrid version. That will be the highest-performance 911 of all”. He went on to specify that the 911 Hybrid would not be a plug-in and that we needn’t worry about the batteries adding extra weight to the car.

The hybrid model will come in the current 992 generation 911. Recently retired 911 chief engineer August Auchleitner had said previously that a 911 Hybrid would use a small electric motor positioned between the PDK gearbox and a six-cylinder engine.

Like the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid which dominates its lineup in terms of performance and power, the Porsche 911 Hybrid would dominate the famed 911 family.

We’re thinking Porsche may use the most powerful 992 combustion engine likely to be found in the upcoming GT2 RS which should do better than the current model’s 641 horsepower, and add the extra electric power to the mix. If that’s the case, over 800 horsepower would be achievable.

The 911 Hybrid would also likely use many components taken from the Porsche 919 Le Mans race car.

In the same interview, Blume indicated that Porsche would like to develop three versions of all of its models. “In all our segments – saloons, SUVs and two-door sports cars – we are looking at having combustion, hybrid and electric.”

Porsche has also been toying with the idea of making the next Porsche 718 fully electric, or at the very least offer an electrified version. The next Porsche Macan planned for 2021 will be fully electric.
