New vehicle affordability is becoming a serious concern for Canadians, and moving down from a compact crossover to a subcompact such as the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross isn’t a bad idea. Now that the RAV4’s base price has crested the $40k mark, it’s time for its small sibling to shine as the brand’s go-to vehicle for families on a budget.
For the 2026 model year, the Corolla Cross gets a revised front fascia, interior updates with a newly available 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with new paint colors and alloy wheel designs. Range-topping variants also gain heated rear seats and a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster.
The lineup still consists of the L, LE, LE Premium and XLE trim levels, equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that develops 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The L and LE can be ordered front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the latter is standard on the LE Premium and XLE.
Meanwhile, the SE Hybrid and XSE Hybrid trim levels rely on a 2.0L four, an electric motor, a 0.9 kWh battery pack and an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic, for a combined output of 196 horsepower and 152 pound-feet. All-wheel drive is standard.
Fuel consumption ratings are as follows:
| Powertrain | City/Highway/Combined (L/100 km) |
| 2.0L I4 with FWD | 7.6 / 7.2 / 7.4 |
| 2.0L I4 with AWD | 8.1 / 7.6 / 7.8 |
| 2.0L I4 Hybrid with AWD | 5.2 / 6.1 / 5.6 |
During our winter test of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid, we managed a decent average of 7.2 L/100 km.
Standard features include LED exterior lighting, heated outside mirrors, 17-inch wheels with covers, heated front seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a seven-inch digital driver instrument cluster, an eight-inch infotainment system touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, automatic high beams, lane departure alert and adaptive cruise control. The LE and SE variants add 17-inch alloy wheels, variable intermittent windshield wipers, heated wiper park, remote connected services for 3 years, single-zone climate control, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, a cargo area tonneau cover, an intelligent key, an alarm system and blind-spot monitoring.
The LE Premium also benefits from a sunroof, roof rails, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.5 inch infotainment touchscreen and wireless phone charging, while the XLE piles on premium exterior lighting with fog lamps, a power liftgate, park assist with autonomous braking, remote and drive connected services for 3 years, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, an eight-way power driver’s seat, Softex simulated leather upholstery, heated rear seats and driver’s seat lumbar support. The range-topping XSE also gets a nine-speaker JBL sound system.
In Canada, 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross pricing ranges from $31,759 to $42,804, including delivery charges, the A/C tax and $899 dealer fees. Competition includes the Buick Encore GX and Buick Envista, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Chevrolet Trax, the Honda HR-V, the Hyundai Kona and Hyundai Venue, the Kia Niro and Kia Seltos, the Mazda CX-30, the Mitsubishi RVR, the Nissan Kicks, the Subaru Crosstrek and the Volkswagen Taos.
From a rational standpoint, Toyota’s subcompact crossover scores points. It’s easy to live with, very fuel-efficient and benefits from a reputation of being reliable, which inevitably leads to strong resale value. It’s also better-equipped than before. We wish there would be a little more interior room, but cargo space is aplenty.
Emotionally, the Corolla Cross doesn’t get our adrenaline pumping, but that shouldn’t be a main purchase criterion for this type of vehicle. Simply put, there’s a lot to like here, little to dislike, and nothing to hate.
