Following Subaru’s strategy of pulling several U.S.-built models from the Canadian market, it comes as no surprise that its three-row electric SUV won’t cross the border. Canadian counter-tariffs are once again to blame.
- The Getaway is Subaru’s version of the Toyota Highlander 2027
- The model made its global debut at the New York Auto Show
- It was expected to deliver up to 480 kilometres of driving range
Canadian counter-tariffs, introduced in response to U.S. trade measures, continue to impact the automotive industry. This time, the decision came before the model even reached Canadian showrooms: the 2027 Subaru Getaway will not be marketed in Canada. This move aligns with Subaru’s broader strategy affecting other U.S.-built models. The Getaway now joins the ranks of the Ascent, Forester Wilderness, and Crosstrek Wilderness, all absent from the Canadian lineup.

Thank you again Toyota
Like all of Subaru’s electric offerings, the Getaway is essentially a rebadged Toyota product. In this case, it is closely related to the Toyota Highlander. While both models share the same platform and exhibit nearly identical styling, the Getaway was expected to deliver significantly more power than its Toyota counterpart.
Under the hood, the Getaway was rated at 420 horsepower thanks to its dual electric motors, compared to 338 hp for the Toyota version. As for battery options, both models feature a standard 77.0 kWh pack, with a larger 95.8 kWh battery enabling a targeted range of up to 480 kilometres.
