Toyota is in the midst of expanding to meet its true potential. They have plenty of hybrids on the road, some serious off-roading vehicles, a collection of EVs on the way, and most importantly for fans, they are building on their recently-founded GR family of vehicles. The latest addition, the GR Corolla, might be the greatest, at least for some.
In our opinion, Toyota’s last misstep was the CH-R small CUV which did one thing right: Introduce us to the brand’s Global Platform. Every vehicle since has been impressive to say the least. Sadly, some of their recent additions from the GR family are not meant for North America.
It has been confirmed, albeit inadvertently, that Toyota will introduce a GR Corolla using the GR Yaris’ powertrain. As reported by CarsGuide, Toyota Yaris GR’s chief engineer, Naohiko Saito, said to them: “It’s wasting time to use a four-wheel-drive system and this 1.6-litre engine (for one car). Personally, I’d like to use this powertrain for each of the other (GR) models,”
The is no official confirmation that there will be such a thing as a Toyota GR Corolla Wagon but the sedan version will be powered by the Yaris’ 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine which produces a surprising 268 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. With AWD, this Corolla will surely be a hoot.
Like the Subaru Levorg, the wagon version of the GR Corolla is unlikely to ever come to us. Having said that, the sedan body styl could work.
