The 2025 Toyota RAV4 is likely the final model year for the current fifth generation, initially introduced as a 2019 model, as an all-new RAV4 is expected to arrive for the 2026 model year.
In the meantime, the Toyota RAV4 continues to dominate the compact crossover segment on the Canadian sales charts, far and away above the second-place Honda CR-V and the third-place Nissan Rogue. Its success can be explained by its affordable price, its reputation for reliability and its comprehensive lineup of trim levels and powertrains.
Some RAV4 units are built in Ontario, Canada.
2025 Toyota RAV4 Changes and Updates
For what is expected to be the final model year in its current form, the RAV4 gets no significant changes to its lineup composed of no less than 16 variants when we count the number of trim levels and available powertrain choices.
Actually, the only difference is that Toyota is no longer calling its PHEV models Prime. As such, the RAV4 Prime simply becomes the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.
2025 Toyota RAV4 Trim Levels and Pricing
The RAV4 is offered in a slew of trim levels, including LE, XLE, Woodland Edition, Trail, SE, XSE and Limited. The Woodland Edition and Trail target consumers who embrace an active lifestyle, while the SE and XSE are sportier in appearance. The Limited is obviously the most luxurious and equipped variant of the bunch. Some trim levels are available with all three powertrains, while others are limited to one or two.
The base powerplant is a naturally aspirated 2.5L four-cylinder engine that develops 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid system uses the 2.5L engine as a base, accompanied by two front-mounted electric motors, a rear-mounted propulsion motor, 1.59 kWh battery pack and an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission, for a combined output of 219 horsepower. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid receives more powerful electric motors and an 18.1 kWh battery pack for a total output of 302 horsepower.
An all-wheel drivetrain is standard across all trim levels in Canada.

2025 Toyota RAV4 Warranty Coverage
In Canada, the RAV4 is covered by a 3-year/60,000 km Limited Warranty (whichever comes first) and a 5-year/100,000 km Powertrain Limited Warranty, along with a 3-year/60,000 km Surface Corrosion Limited Warranty and a 5-year/unlimited km Anti-Perforation Limited Warranty. The RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid high-voltage batteries are backed by a 10-year/240,000 km warranty (whichever comes first) while the hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 160,000 km.
24-hour roadside assistance is offered on the RAV4 for 3 years with unlimited km in Canada.
What the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Does Well
- Versatility is one of the RAV4’s strong points. Cargo space ranks above average in its segment, and there’s ample room for all passengers on board. In addition, there are numerous storage points spread across the cabin to keep our belongings handy on longer road trips.
- The RAV4 arguably benefits from the best reputation for reliability in its segment, which in return has a positive effect on resale value. This despite taking a hard knock for high-voltage battery cable corrosion issues covering 2019 to 2022 model-year units, eventually leading to a class action settlement by Toyota with RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime owners.
- Fuel economy is pretty high in the RAV4. The non-hybrid units rank among the top three in the segment, while the HEV and PHEV variants are the most fuel-efficient. Actually, the Ford Escape PHEV beats the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid on the combined cycle (5.9 L/100 km versus 6.0 L/100 km), but the Toyota is equipped with AWD while the Ford is front-wheel drive only.
- As mentioned above, with 16 different combinations to choose from, there’s a RAV4 for just about every need and budget. In addition, Toyota has wisely placed hybrid powertrains into lower-priced trim levels, while most of the so-equipped competitors are only offered in range-topping trim levels.
What the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Doesn’t Do Well
- The RAV4’s 2.5L engine is efficient, but it’s not a noise, vibration and harshness benchmark. It’s not bad, but many rivals’ gasoline engines are smoother and feel more refined.
- Driving pleasure isn’t the main focus of the RAV4. It’s designed to be functional and rational, not soul-stirring. Of course, most compact crossover shoppers don’t have “fun to drive” at the top of their purchase criterion.
- When no provincial or federal purchase or lease incentives for electrified vehicles are available, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can be quite costly, with a base price of about $55K. That’s a lot of money for a compact crossover. The PHEV variants of the Ford Escape, Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander all start at lower price points, while the Hyundai Tucson plug-in starts at $55K, but comes fully loaded.
- Most RAV4 variants have a modest towing capacity. Shoppers who need to tow a more substantial trailer or camper must choose the RAV4 Trail with its 3,500-pound or 1,588 kg rating, or splurge for the PHEVs with their 2,500-pound, 1,134 kg rating.
2025 Toyota RAV4 Competition
The RAV4 competes with the Buick Envision, the Chevrolet Equinox, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Ford Bronco Sport, the Ford Escape, the GMC Terrain, the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, the Jeep Compass, the Kia Sportage, the Mazda CX-5, the Mazda CX-50, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Nissan Rogue, the Subaru Forester and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
